About UsThe late John Giles, a respected military historian, was the founder of the Western Front Association which was inaugurated on 11th November 1980. Since then it has grown into a large organisation boasting over 6,500 members worldwide. Membership allows access to many WW1 documents, including trench maps and service records. Members also receive, every year, 3 copies each of the Association's journal, 'Stand To', and in-house magazine, 'The Bulletin'. Use the link to the National Association's website for more details.
Our BranchThe Worcestershire & Herefordshire Branch was founded in February 1998 by WFA members, Martin and Frances Fricker, who became our first Chairman and Treasurer respectively. A number of people who attended that first meeting are still active branch members. Many eminent military historians and authors have spoken at our meetings over the years. These include; Julian Putkowski, a leading light in the 'Shot At Dawn' campaign to pardon the more than 300 British soldiers executed during the Great War; Prof. Peter Simkins, former curator of the Imperial War Museum; Michael Stedman, the author of 'The Manchester Pals' and 'The Salford Pals', who has also advised on numerous TV documentaries relating to the Great War; and Peter Hart, author and Oral Historian at the Imperial War Museum, whose taped interviews with veterans of both world wars have provided a fascinating insight into the effects of war on the ordinary soldier.
These talks have expanded the knowledge of our members, and visitors alike. Whilst we encourage and promote Association membership, our meetings are open to any member of the public and all are welcome.
